Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD)

As the nation’s sixth-largest community-owned electric utility, SMUD has been providing low-cost, reliable electricity in an environmentally-responsible way for more than 70 years to Sacramento County (and small adjoining portions of Placer and Yolo Counties).

And as a vertically-integrated utility, SMUD has experience and expertise in all facets of energy supply – from power generation to product and service delivery to customers and everything in between. It’s that experience that makes SMUD the perfect choice for CCAs.

In addition, our values are closely aligned with CCAs in supporting local decision making, product choice, affordable rates, greenhouse gas reduction, energy efficiency and a nonprofit, public power business model. Our Community Energy Services (CES) team offers data management and call center services, wholesale energy services, financial modeling and budget services and start-up services to California CCAs.

Community Choice Partners

Community Choice Partners, Inc. provides strategic consulting and technical services to a diverse array of stakeholders active in the Community Choice Energy (CCE) industry. Clients have included operational CCE agencies, local governments and municipal utilities seeking to implement new CCE agencies, community stakeholders such as labor unions and social/ environmental justice nonprofits, and innovative energy companies evaluating the market.

As a recognized thought-leader in CCE agency design and operations, Community Choice Partners has helped to define the “CCE 2.0” and “CCE 3.0” maturity models as a roadmap to (1) evolve the operational models of individual CCE agencies while simultaneously (2) creating a joint-action “Super Agency” to provide a scalable “energy services platform” and expert staff coordination across all individual CCE agencies.

These CCE 2.0 & 3.0 maturity models — by integrating data management, machine learning and new business intelligence analytics, customizable retail products and customer engagement capabilities, Distributed Energy functions and energy portfolio risk optimization—are designed to lower energy costs, target and manage risk, increase operating efficiencies, maximize value creation for customers and remove barriers to continuous innovation as the CCE industry expands to serve a majority of California’s electricity load.
